Background
Disinfection is the process of destroying or inactivating disease-causing (pathogenic) organisms, and is mostly relevant to water supplies.  Although it is not as thorough as sterilization, which completely destroys all living organisms, disinfection makes the water safe for drinking and cooking. Examples of waterborne diseases caused by microorganisms are gastroenteritis, leptospirosis, typhoid fever, salmonellosis, shigellosis and cholera.

Worldwide, 1,2 billion people do not have access to clean and safe drinking water, and 2,4 billion people lack sanitation. Every year, 5 million people die of waterborne diseases.

Disinfection can traditionally be classified as either chemical or physical. Because of its high availability and relatively low cost, chlorination is still dominant in the disinfection market. Due to the severe toxicity of chlorine to humans, as well as the safety hazards (such as fire), chlorination using other chemicals has been developed, for example sodium hypochlorite. Chlorination is also known to produce secondary, unwanted products, such as trihalomethanes (THM), which is potentially carcinogenic.

For this reason, other disinfection technologies such as ultraviolet irradiation and ozone disinfection have been developed. These technologies typically require significant capital investment and are fairly high in power consumption compared to chlorination.

Quantum’s disinfection technology was developed to overcome the concerns of chemical addition and power consumption. Quantum Disinfection technology is chemical-free, power-free, maintenance-free and extremely cost effective and functions as a final disinfection solution for all fluid applications on any scale. The core of the disinfection systems is the activated ceramics with super-germicidal surfaces.

Technology Summary
Decontaminating the water with no added chemicals, no energy consumption and without any regular intervention, Quantum’s systems differ significantly from all other disinfection techniques. The product functions due to the Activated SilicaTM or Activated Alumina ceramics placed into the disinfection chambers. Any microorganism that gets into direct contact with our powerful germicidal ceramics is removed in less than 0,1 seconds. This is achieved through an electron transfer method, which occurs on the surface of the disinfection media, and instantly ruptures the pathogen on a molecular level.

We have available in‐pipe systems for smaller applications and gravity systems for larger applications. Equipped with a 30 µm screen, the in-pipe system can easily be connected to any kind of standard piping, or customised to any specific small wastewater treatment plant capacity.  Gravitational disinfection systems are applied to disinfect wastewater flows in excess of 90 m3/h, typical for municipal wastewater treatment plants. These systems are easily retrofitted in existing chlorine contact systems.  The gravitational units are specifically designed and customised for each wastewater treatment plant.
